The number one song on the Billboard chart was Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You. Amberly, who was a model, reminisced about Whitney’s Seventeen Magazine cover. “I remember her from those days,” she said.

Being with Amberly was a glimpse into a world I’d observed but never lived in. She took me to the MAC counter and suggested a lip pencil and lipstick shade for me, a matte berry brown. I wasn’t accustomed to expensive make-up, but when Amberly told me how to apply it — lip balm first, then the pencil all over the lip, then the lipstick — I saw the difference it made.
